Under the hood we found that the Enyo is driven by the Indilinx ‘Barefoot’ controller with the standard 64MB cache. This is of course the very same controller that was made famous by the original OCZ Vertex series and was later adopted by the more affordable Agility as well. While we were somewhat surprised to find the Indilinx Barefoot controller inside the Enyo now that OCZ is using SandForce chips on more and more products, the choice actually makes perfect sense....

The RevoDrive 350 doesn’t quite manage to reach the claimed sequential read performance of 1800MB/s, though those figures are often based on Atto results which we will look at shorty. Still, with a throughput of 1452MB/s the RevoDrive 350 is blisteringly fast – 107% quicker than the RevoDrive 3 X2, in fact, and 181% faster than the SanDisk Extreme II. The write performance also fell short of the claimed 1700MB/s at 902MB/s, 63% faster than the RevoDrive 3 X2 and 86% faster than the SanDisk Extreme II....

The year is 2009. Nvidia’s GTX 295 was ruling the graphics card market, Apple had recently released the iPhone 3G, and Microsoft had announced its newest operating system, Windows 7, to high amounts of consumer praise. Users finally felt like a suitable upgrade from Windows XP had arrived, and within two years, roughly 45 percent of PC owners had installed Windows 7 on their machines. Fast forward three years, and along comes Windows 8....

ClamAV recently released its latest version, an update that can be considered historically significant despite its lackluster changelog. The milestone is ClamAV finally reaching version 1.0.0. It’s the first major release as versioning conventions go, and it came only six months after celebrating its 20th birthday. Tomasz Kojm, the original creator of ClamAV, released the first version (0.10) on May 8, 2002. ClamAV 1.0.0 follows the previously released version 0....

The rig I’ll be checking out today breaks both of those stereotypes. Origin’s Chronos packs top-of-the-line, name brand components in a tiny chassis. This includes an Intel Core i7 7700K CPU, 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, a 512GB Samsung 960 Pro SSD and a 4TB WD Black for storage – all neatly installed in a MSI Z270i Pro Carbon AC motherboard....

After two years of continued growth, PC shipments are now declining, as we see a 5.1 percent decrease in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. This is likely a result of companies calling workers to return to their offices, even if they don’t want to. The reported decrease doesn’t mean we’re witnessing the start of a crash. Instead, we should look at these numbers considering the existing supply chain and logistical issues....

The Reg writes that after schools in The Philippines closed due to Covid-19 outbreaks, the government allocated funds to purchase nearly 70,000 laptops so teachers could continue working. But the Philippines Commission of Audit found some significant discrepancies with the purchase. The Department of Education allocated P35,046.50, or $627, for each laptop, but it ultimately agreed to pay P58,300 ($1,042) for every unit, and this was despite one bidder offering a lower price of P43,000 ($770)....

To benchmark Overwatch I let 12 skill-less Zaryas loose to run around and annoy each other – no Zaryas were harmed during this benchmark. Using the Epic quality preset both mid-range GPUs provided respectable performance and quite shockingly the RX 570 just managed to edge ahead of the 1060 in this one. Doom provides little challenge for these GPUs at 1080p and both averaged well over 100 fps at all times in our test scene....

With the new Blade Stealth, Razer has increased the battery capacity to 53.6 Wh. Considering this battery is just under 20% larger than its predecessor, when combined with Kaby Lake’s slightly improved efficiency in low power SKUs, the new Blade Stealth should last a fair bit longer. Razer themselves list “up to 9 hours” of battery life. In both our laptop battery benchmarks, the Kaby Lake Blade Stealth significantly outperforms its Skylake predecessor....

Former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé is not a big fan of the metaverse—at least not in the way that the company formerly known as Facebook envisions it. During a session with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang on Saturday, Fils-Aimé was asked what he thought of Meta’s “pivot” toward the metaverse and whether its approach would bear fruit. “I’m not a buyer of that idea,” Fils-Aimé said. “I don’t think that their current definition is going to be successful....

A handful of companies have attempted to create a marketable pair of consumer smart glasses (Google Glass, anyone?) or goggles, and so far, they haven’t exactly taken the world by storm. Meta hopes it can succeed where others have failed, according to The Verge. The company is reportedly aiming to deliver its first-gen AR glasses by 2024 (as well as a cheaper version known as “Hypernova”), with increasingly advanced designs set to follow in 2026 and 2028....

DigiTimes reports that possible fresh Covid outbreaks in China could impact PC and laptop launches early next year due to labor supply disruptions. China’s government started relaxing strict Covid lockdowns after fierce protests occurred across the country. Because China has yet to achieve herd immunity, some fear new outbreaks could be severe enough to affect manufacturing and by extension global supply chains. Some Chinese notebook supply chain plants reported infections impacting up to half of their workers, sources tell DigiTimes....

Last week, Microsoft released an AMA on YouTube (above) in which members of the Windows development team answered questions about the operating system. When asked about moving the taskbar, Microsoft Head of Product Tali Roth explained that resurrecting the feature isn’t currently a priority because of the relatively small number of users requesting it. Roth said that the amount of work required to make Windows 11 apps recognize a taskbar on the right, left, or top of the screen is disproportionate to the demand for the ability to move it....

Speaking at the virtual 24th Annual Needham Growth Conference (via Seeking Alpha), Kress said that demand for Nvidia’s GeForce products far outweighed supply last year, as we know, but team green is optimistic that the situation will improve later this year. “We are working, as we’ve mentioned, in terms of longer-term, getting that supply. In the second half of calendar ‘22, we believe we’ll be in a great position with our overall supply in terms of our estimations of what we will need going forward,” Kress explained....

Although there isn’t likely to be a dramatic performance difference between the two chips, the $220 1600 comes bundled with the 95-watt ‘Wraith Spire’ cooler, while the $250 1600X doesn’t come with a cooler at all. If you add the cost of a basic heatsink to the 1600X, the non-X version is around 20% cheaper, yet it shouldn’t be more than 10% slower out of the box. The ‘X-rated’ 1600X also features “XFR” or Extended Frequency Range, which is basically a beefier version of Turbo that lets the CPU overclock itself a little harder when attributes such as power, current and thermals are within acceptable ranges....

It’s no surprise that in 2014, Samsung is releasing their fourth-generation Galaxy Note. Like the Galaxy S5 that launched earlier this year, the Galaxy Note 4 is an incremental update on what came before it. It’s a similar size to and, on initial inspection, looks quite like the Galaxy Note 3, though the changes bat a little deeper than what might be apparent to begin with. To start with, the Galaxy S6 comes within 1.5% of the Galaxy S6 Edge, so that essentially indicates identical performance. Comparing the Galaxy S6 to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 801-powered Galaxy S5, we’re seeing 28% better CPU performance from the former. This lead extends to 34% up against the Exynos-powered Galaxy S5, which featured an Exynos 5422 SoC. The Galaxy S6 is also 18% and 14% faster than the Exynos 5430-powered Galaxy Alpha and Exynos 5433-powered Galaxy Note 4 respectively in CPU-bound tasks....

As this is an Edge product, the 5.5-inch display is curved along both the left and right edges. This does introduce slight distortions along those edges, as well as increased reflections, but it’s easy to get used to this aspect of the Edge after a short period of time. Eventually you’ll come to love the curve as it looks awesome and it makes for a very ‘swooshable’ experience when you’re moving through screens and other content....

The admission isn’t all that surprising given the rapidly evolving landscape of the smartphone industry. Samsung introduced the original Galaxy Note at IFA Berlin in 2011. The handset featured a massive (for the time) 5.3-inch display and came bundled with a stylus that Samsung referred to as the S Pen. Some questioned why Samsung would make a smartphone with such a large screen, but the doubters were soon quieted as consumers proved that excess was in....

The T3 1TB delivered exceptional upload performance, sustaining 318MB/s in our single large file test for 165% more performance than the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 128GB and 90% more than the Kingston HyperX Max 64GB. This time the T3 was 3.5x faster than a 2.5" hard drive. Again in our game transfer test, when uploading, the T3 was slower than the T1, albeit not by a significant margin. The last upload test uses our program data and again the T3 was slower than the T1, this time by a 9% margin....
